This is my hometown, Friday Harbor, Washington, on San Juan Island. The island is one of the San Juan Islands, a cluster lying between Washington state and the Canadian province of British Columbia, at the junction of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Strait of Georgia—an area with no definitive name, though sometimes called North Puget Sound, and other times the Salish Sea. The islands are popular with tourists during the summer, but are otherwise pretty isolated. Almost the only way to get here is by ferry! I moved here in early 2009. I’d always wanted to live on an island like this, with its isolation, small‑town living, and natural beauty—and now I’m living that dream.
