Slappy Hooper Returns for 30th Anniversary

Sept. 30, 2023—Thirty years after its first publication, Aaron’s picture book The Legend of Slappy Hooper: An American Tall Tale is returning to print in a brand-new edition in 2024. This tall tale of a larger-than-life sign painter was developed as a companion piece to Aaron’s ever-popular cowboy tall tale, The Legend of Lightning Larry, with both books illustrated by the inimitable Toni Goffe. There’s one big difference, though: Larry’s tale was a totally original story of Aaron’s, while Slappy’s is retold from an authentic “urban folktale” of Chicago in the early 20th century. Already available for pre-ordering, Slappy will appear as an ebook in January, and in paperback and hardcover in February. An advance reading copy of the book is available for free download and evaluation. Also available is a reader’s theater script, in both regular and Team versions, as well as a storytelling version with tips for telling. And teachers will want to check out Aaron’s fun writing exercise based on the story.

“The Christmas Truce” Gets a Royal Reading

Dec. 24, 2021—Aaron’s fictional story “The Christmas Truce”—condensed and titled “A Letter from a Soldier to His Sister”—was read by Tom Felton of Harry Potter fame as part of the British television network ITV’s 2021 Christmas Eve special, “Royal Carols: Together at Christmas.” The program was sponsored by Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge, and prerecorded on Dec. 8 at Westminster Abbey. (The letter—credited on screen to Aaron Shepherd rather than Shepard—seems to have been believed by most viewers to be an actual letter from World War I, so adding to the myths surrounding the Christmas Truce!) Aaron’s story is available also in versions for storytelling and reader’s theater, as well as in a picture book illustrated by Wendy Edelson.
